Enhancing Core Teaching Skills with Technology

#4. Promote and Model Digital Citizenship and Responsibility

Teachers understand local and global societal issues and responsibilities in an evolving digital culture and exhibit legal and ethical behavior in their professional practices. Teachers:

  • advocate, model, and teach safe, legal, and ethical use of digital information and technology, including respect for copyright, intellectual property, and the appropriate documentation of sources
  • address the diverse needs of all learners by using learner-centered strategies providing equitable access to appropriate digital tools and resources
  • promote and model digital etiquette and responsible social interactions related to the use of technology and information
  • develop and model cultural understanding and global awareness by engaging with colleagues and students of other cultures using digital-age communication and collaboration tools

Module 4 - Website Evaluation

I researched DHMO and my findings were that DHMO was just ordinary H2O or water. This is definitely a fake website intended to scare the public. There was no author and it had fake links. I saw no posted date or revisions. Whois.net stated that BanDHMO was not a currently registered website.
We have to be so careful about information that is on the Internet. Research and asking the 5 W's will aid us in our search for validity of websites. It is very important to investigate the links and verify our findings.
It is easy to be fooled by advertisements and articles. They are designed to attract our attention and create a sense of fear, promise, etc. in the reader. I plan to help my students research and ask questions about websites they may encounter. We should never believe what we read until investigation takes place as to the validity of an article or website.

 Digital Citizenship

In the Austin School District, all nine DC themes are not met. We are making attempts on themes 1-3, 6,7 and 9. Some regulations and attempts are being made on theme 4. There are no attempts on themes 5 and 8.
Our program is implemented by the Austin School Board, the administration and individual teachers. Dr. Hutcheson and Guy(our computer technician) are in charge of what is available to us.
Students must sign a form and accept responsibility for their actions on the computer. We monitor their activity and have consequences for inappropriate usage.
My responsibility for teaching DC to my students is to instruct and guide them in the proper use of our equipment. They have learning programs available in kindergarten, but students do not research on their own. Teacher guidance is required at this early age.

Austin's Internet Policy

I believe our school has an effective internet policy. We were given a paper to review and sign in the beginning of the school year. It explains the system is only for educational use and warns that violaters will lose computer priveleges and receive disciplinary action. This applies to staff and students.
We have a set of rules to follow. The topics in our rules are titled: Purpose, Authority, Responsibility, Guidelines, Security and Consequences for Inappropriate Uses. The guidelines section states 16 uses that are prohibited. Digital citizenship is stressed and expected by all users.
Kindergarteners are taught respect and responsibilty for activites on the computer. They are supervised and lose priveleges if they do not comply to the rules. Kindergarteners know that they can participate in computer activities if they demonstrate proper behavior and good listening skills.

Our policy was enacted by the school board and administration. It cannot be changed by the technology department.

Rationale for Digital Citizenship and Activities

Students should be educated in the correct use of technology. Digital citizenship should be taught in conjunction with our school's computer policy. Students will use the computer throughout their lives. Correct usage and etiquette is essential.

I would use activities on Beyond Emily:Posting Etiquette on the website Edutopia.

My Reflection on meeting this standard (So What?)

This standard made me aware of digital citizenship and to be leary of some websites. I learned how to teach my students digital etiquette and promote the correct
use of digital tools in my classroom.

My Future Learning Goals related to this standard (Now What?)

In the future I will promote respect and responsibility for use of digital tools and continue to explore more Web 2.0 tools.
